Chaos erupted in Bromley on Tuesday morning when a fire broke out at an end-of-terrace home on Farmfield Road. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was alerted at 8:58am after receiving seven emergency 999 calls.
Six fire engines and approximately 40 firefighters were dispatched from Bromley, Lee Green, Lewisham, and Forest Hill stations. Upon arrival, crews found the ground floor engulfed in flames, with extensive damage to half of the ground floor, most of the staircase and first floor, as well as part of the roof.
By 10:30am, firefighters had brought the blaze under control.
London Ambulance Service treated two residents at the scene for smoke inhalation, and a child was taken to hospital for further checks. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Investigations determined the fire was accidental, originating from a faulty lithium-ion battery pack of an electric bike. Fire officials cautioned that such incidents are becoming an increasing urban hazard.
An LFB spokesperson highlighted the risks associated with modified or improperly charged e-bike and e-scooter batteries, stating: “E-bikes and e-scooters are a green, sustainable way to travel. But some of these vehicles pose huge fire risks—especially when fitted with second-hand batteries or charged incorrectly.”
Data indicates that London has experienced a fire involving e-bikes or e-scooters approximately every two days since January 2023.
The London Fire Brigade recommends the following fire safety tips:
- Use only manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers.
- Avoid second-hand or incompatible parts.
- Never leave e-bikes or e-scooters charging unattended, particularly overnight.
- Charge and store devices in a well-ventilated area, away from exits or flammable materials.
