A dangerous drink-driver has been locked up after leading Sussex police on a high-speed pursuit through Brighton last summer.
On 22 July, officers from the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit spotted a speeding Seat Arona tearing through the Seven Dials area. The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Jordan Lewis, took police on a chase through the city before finally stopping in Cannon Place.
Lewis, who has no fixed address, was arrested on the spot. Thankfully, no injuries were reported to him or anyone else during the incident.
Lewis was charged with multiple offences, including taking a vehicle without consent, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and drink-driving with 137mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, well above the legal limit of 80mg.
Initially, Lewis refused to answer police questions but later pleaded guilty to all charges at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.
On 11 March, the court sentenced Lewis to 34 weeks in jail. He was also banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.
This sentence sends a clear message that drink-driving and dangerous pursuits will not be tolerated on Brighton’s streets.
