David John Grover, aged 72, from Margate, was found dead at the base of a cliff in Cornwall on November 22, shortly before he was due to stand trial for serious child sex offences.
The discovery of Grover’s body near Mousehole, Cornwall, prompted a large-scale emergency response. Police, coastguard cliff rescue teams, RNLI crews, and ambulance services were all involved following reports of a man seen near the cliff path.
Grover was scheduled to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on November 24. He faced charges including indecent assault, sexual assault, and inciting a child into sexual activity. However, his case has since been withdrawn following court enquiries.
A spokesperson for Canterbury Crown Court stated, “The case is currently at a sensitive stage and we cannot provide any further information. The next hearing date is currently yet to be fixed.”
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that Grover’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A full inquest into the cause of death is planned for next year.
Kent Police have declined to comment on the matter. The coroner’s inquest was opened and adjourned on November 27 as authorities prepare for a thorough investigation.
