A 58-year-old man has avoided jail after a hit-and-run incident in Basingstoke left a cyclist seriously injured. Abbas John, from Maidenhead Road, was involved in a collision with a 52-year-old woman cyclist on January 14 in Jays Close.
The cyclist sustained a fractured skull and multiple ankle fractures as a result of the crash. Instead of stopping to assist, John fled the scene.
John later appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court, where he admitted to charges of careless driving, failing to stop, and not reporting the collision.
Despite the serious injuries caused, John was sentenced to a 12-month driving ban, 180 hours of community service, and fined £710 plus £85 in court costs. He did not receive a jail sentence.
