The heartbreaking case of 13-month-old Preston Davey is set to be heard at Preston Crown Court this April. Jamie Varley, 36, and John McGowan-Fazakerley, 31, the couple who adopted Preston, stand accused of horrendous abuse that led to the baby’s death in July 2023.
Varley faces charges including murder and manslaughter. Additional charges against him include assault by penetration, grievous bodily harm, and child cruelty. He is also charged with multiple counts related to creating, possessing, and distributing indecent images of a child. Furthermore, Varley allegedly possessed extreme pornography dating back to 2017. McGowan-Fazakerley faces charges of child cruelty and allowing the death of a child. Both men deny all allegations, including the sexual assault of Preston.
The abuse reportedly occurred within just three months of Preston being placed in their care. Emergency services were called on 27 July 2023, when Preston was brought to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unresponsive. The baby was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Both defendants, who are from Grimsargh near Preston, have been held in custody since a pre-trial hearing earlier this year. The trial is scheduled to begin imminently, as the nation awaits answers in this tragic and disturbing case.
