30 Years On, Police Still Hunt Killer of Brave Officer
Detectives have launched a fresh appeal to solve the cold-blooded murder of off-duty officer DC Jim Morrison, who was stabbed 30 years ago during a robbery in London’s West End. The heartfelt plea aired on BBC’s Crimewatch Live this week as police ramp up their search for justice.
£50,000 Reward in Murder of Covent Garden Officer
On the night of 13 December 1991, 26-year-old DC Morrison was stabbed after struggling to arrest a man suspected of bag theft outside the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Despite multiple arrests and international leads, the killer remains at large.
The Met Police and Crimestoppers have combined forces to offer a whopping £50,000 reward for information leading to the culprit’s capture – £30,000 from the Met and £20,000 from Crimestoppers.
Bold Officer Chased Suspect Alone, Paid Ultimate Price
Jim, known for his dedication and flair in tackling street crime, was unarmed and off-duty when he stepped in. After an evening at the Nell Gwynne pub, he spotted a gang of bag snatchers active nearby. Witnesses saw him wrestle a man around 10pm before the suspect fled, stabbing Jim in the process.
The attacker was described as a North African male, about 5ft 10in, aged 27-30, with dark collar-length hair featuring tight curls at the front, clean-shaven, and wearing a tan or brown leather jacket.
“DC Morrison died trying to protect the public from a violent offender,” said Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves. “He was off duty, unarmed, and in plain clothes. His bravery cost him his life. We believe the breakthrough lies with those who lived and worked in London’s West End back in 1991.”
Police Plea: Come Forward, No Matter How Small the Tip
Despite international investigations tracing leads across Europe and Canada, the case remains unsolved. DCI Reeves believes vital information is still out there.
Alexa Loukas, London Regional Manager at Crimestoppers, urged people to speak anonymously: “If you know anything, no matter how small, please come forward. Our 24/7 contact centre is open, and your identity will never be traced.”
