A shocking discovery has left police searching for answers after the body of a woman in her sixties was found in woodland at Watlington Hill National Trust park.
At around 5.53pm on Friday, 23 October, emergency services discovered the woman’s body in the Christmas Common area. Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers. Formal identification and a post-mortem examination have yet to be completed.
Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit swiftly launched a murder investigation following the discovery. Officers arrested a 23-year-old man connected to the case. He was found naked and bleeding nearby and is currently being treated in hospital. His condition is serious but stable.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Craig Kirby said: “We believe this was not a random attack and that the victim and the attacker were known to each other. We are in the very early stages of our enquiries and understand the community’s concerns.”
He added, “The arrested man remains in police custody while receiving treatment. We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Thames Valley Police on 101 quoting reference 1300 of 23/10/20. To report anonymously, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police have stated that several scenes in the Christmas Common area will remain cordoned off during the ongoing investigation. Officers reassure the public that they will see an increased police presence and can approach uniformed officers if they have concerns or information.
