Kent Fire and Rescue Service rushed to a house in Seasalter, Whitstable, after a kitchen fire broke out. Two fire engines arrived promptly at the Beaconsfields home, where crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the flames using a hose reel jet.
The fire reportedly started when a hob was accidentally left on, heating a used chip pan. This caused a takeaway pizza box placed on top of the hob to ignite, sparking the blaze.
Thanks to the sounding smoke alarm, the residents were able to escape safely before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Three people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being handed over to SECAmb for further care. In a dramatic rescue, firefighters saved a puppy and a parrot from the smoke-filled home. The dog was given oxygen via a pet mask, while the parrot was taken to a veterinarian as a precautionary measure.
Following the incident, Kent Firefighters issued a warning to the public about kitchen safety. They advised always keeping ovens, hobs, and grills clean, never leaving items such as takeaway boxes near heat sources, and ensuring smoke alarms are functioning properly to provide early warnings.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and keep their kitchens clutter-free to avoid similar dangerous situations and ensure safety for both people and pets.
