Emergency services responded to a significant fire off Sewardstone Road in Waltham Abbey, Essex, on Sunday, resulting in the evacuation of several residents and workers. The fire broke out close to Northfield Nursery, producing thick black smoke that was visible from miles away.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, people living in nearby homes and care homes were forced to leave their premises as firefighters worked to control the flames. Staff at Kinglea Court care home, located opposite the fire, assisted evacuees by providing water and snacks during the incident.
Several households, including some with pets, were temporarily displaced because of the fire. Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions and the sound of glass shattering as the fire spread through the area.
The thick black smoke generated by the fire drifted across the local area and was reportedly visible as far away as Upshire. Many local residents also noted a strong smell of burning oil in the air during the height of the blaze, which caused considerable concern in the community.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire has now been extinguished, although emergency crews remain on site to monitor the situation. Essex Police are also present, managing the scene and ensuring public safety.
Local resident Karen Nell described the scene on social media, saying, “You could hear explosions and glass breaking. The smoke was huge, clouds were black, smelt almost like oil.” Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire and have been approached for further updates.
