Sami Benning, also known as Samuel Groves from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, was found dead in his prison cell just hours before he was due to be released. The body was discovered on Monday morning by staff at HM Prison Guys Marsh in Shaftesbury.
Prison officers were shocked to find Benning deceased in his cell mere hours before his scheduled release that same day. The exact cause of death remains unknown at this time.
A police spokesman confirmed, “We can confirm that a body was found this morning. It was a man in his cell. He died overnight and was found this morning.” The Ministry of Justice stated that the Prison Service Ombudsman will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be carried out this afternoon by a Home Office pathologist to determine the cause of death.
Benning was expected to return to the Isle of Wight following his release. This sudden and tragic event has left the community in shock and raised many unanswered questions as officials work to understand what happened behind bars.
