Chemical chaos erupted in Fleet last night as emergency crews rushed to contain a toxic gas leak on Pine Grove. Police quickly sealed off parts of the street while a Detection, Identification and Monitoring (DIM) unit performed urgent tests inside homes cordoned off by fire and police teams.
The alarm was raised just after 9pm, prompting fire crews and a Hazard Area 1 unit from the South East Coast Ambulance Service to respond. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but specialists remain on site as the chemical has not yet been fully identified.
Crews from Basingstoke, Fleet, and the DIM unit closed the road for three hours during forensic testing. Officials later confirmed that the noxious cloud was a toxic mixture of chlorine tablets, water, and battery acid. This hazardous combination was left behind after the homeowner attempted to clean a caravan water system.
The property remains in darkness and is heavily guarded, with police officers stationed outside to ensure public safety. Early this morning, fire teams returned to the home to verify that all traces of the chemical haze were completely cleared.
Residents are advised to avoid the area as authorities continue their investigation into this dangerous chemical incident.
