A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in police custody after a shocking attack in Leigh.
The disturbing incident occurred on April 22, around 4pm, near Westleigh Park. The victim, a 14-year-old girl, was walking along a footpath when a male dragged her into nearby bushes and assaulted her.
Superintendent Mark Kenny of Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan District confirmed that a swift investigation led to the arrest. He reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat following the attack.
“While people in the area will continue to see an increased police presence this evening and over the coming days, I would like to stress that we don’t consider there to be any wider threat to the public following this attack,” said Superintendent Kenny.
Authorities are not currently seeking anyone else linked to the crime but have urged anyone with information to come forward.
“I’d like to encourage anyone with information to still get in touch, if you have not done so already,” added Superintendent Kenny.
The victim is now receiving specialist care, and police continue to support her and her family during this difficult time.
