Greater Manchester Police have recorded more than 6,200 drivers exceeding speed limits since the lockdown started on March 23. Despite strict regulations prohibiting non-essential travel, some motorists continue to speed on the unusually quiet roads.
Speeding has surged by 57% in identified trouble spots in recent weeks. While most residents adhere to the rules, reckless drivers are creating dangerous situations. GMP is increasing patrols to catch these offenders and safeguard frontline emergency workers.
Superintendent Julie Ellison of GMP’s Specialist Operations Team emphasised the dangers, stating, “Speeding can have devastating consequences. It not only raises the risk of crashes but worsens their severity—sometimes fatally.”
She continued, “With emergency services stretched, speeding collisions drain vital NHS, fire, and police resources. We’ve seen disgraceful cases like 115mph on a 40mph street, and a snarling 129mph on the M62. The limits aren’t a joke. They save lives.”
Officers are actively pursuing drivers who treat quiet roads like race tracks. GMP is collaborating with local communities to curb this dangerous behaviour.
“Please report any speeding or reckless driving in your area to help us target trouble spots,” said Superintendent Ellison. “Together, we can keep Greater Manchester safe. Stay Home. Save Lives.”
