A 30-year-old man has been released on conditional bail after a savage dog attack in Staffordshire that resulted in the death of 52-year-old Ian Price.
The brutal mauling took place on Main Street, Stonnall, Staffordshire, at around 3.15pm last Thursday. Mr Price was left fatally injured and later died in hospital.
The suspect, a man from Lichfield, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and having dogs dangerously out of control. Staffordshire Police have conducted several interviews but have now released him while investigations continue.
“Our investigation continues at pace as we try to understand more about events leading up to this horrendous attack,” Staffordshire Police said.
The deadly dogs involved are believed to be XL bullies, based on initial examinations by experts. DNA tests are currently underway to confirm the exact breed.
One dog died while being restrained after the attack, and the other was put down by a vet.
Police had previously warned the dog owner twice earlier in 2024 following public reports. In January, officers cautioned about the two XL bullies being off-lead in a Stonnall field. Although the dogs appeared calm at that time, advice was given on proper control.
In March, the dogs reportedly mounted another dog but caused no injuries. Police reiterated safety advice during a follow-up conversation with the owner.
The tragic death of Ian Price has prompted a political response. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced plans to ban the XL bully breed by the end of 2024.
This decision follows a series of dangerous dog incidents raising urgent safety concerns across the nation.
