Drivers on the vital M2 motorway in Kent are experiencing severe delays following a vehicle breakdown that has caused six miles of standstill traffic. The incident occurred eastbound between Junction 5 at Sittingbourne and Junction 6 at Faversham.
Emergency crews, including traffic officers and recovery teams, are working urgently to remove the stranded vehicle and reopen the lanes. National Highways: South East has warned motorists to prepare for long delays extending into the morning rush hour.
The M2 is a key commuter route for those travelling to London and across Kent, so the disruption is resulting in widespread gridlock across the region.
Adding to the traffic nightmare, drainage works between M2 junctions 5 and 7 are causing lane closures, with these disruptions expected to continue until July 2024. Elsewhere in the region, congestion is also building on the A249 southbound and the A2 London-bound routes this morning.
In addition, Sussex Police report a multi-vehicle crash on the A27 eastbound near the Amex Stadium, causing delays of up to 60 minutes.
Drivers are advised that normal traffic flow is expected to resume after 11:15am. Motorists are urged to remain patient and consider alternative routes where possible. Staying updated with live traffic information and driving carefully through the affected zones is strongly recommended.
