London’s electric fire engine, known as ZEPA1 (Zero Emission Capable Pumping Appliance), remains grounded after almost three years without a single callout. Unveiled by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) in 2022 with high expectations, the vehicle was expected to join frontline service within a year. However, it has yet to respond to any fire or incident since its launch.
Stationed at Hammersmith Fire Station, ZEPA1 is still in trial mode and has not been mobilised for any emergency response. Both LFB and local firefighters confirm the vehicle has not been used operationally, sparking concerns about its practical readiness and effectiveness.

Challenges Delaying Deployment

- Charging Issues: A 150kW charger was reportedly installed at Hammersmith Fire Station, but staff have been unable to locate it.
- Training and Equipment Upgrades: ZEPA1 requires modifications to accommodate new breathing apparatus, delaying its operational use.
- Technical Concerns: Electric engines have yet to prove their reliability in the demanding conditions of fire response.

No Deployments Since January 2025
Despite Hammersmith crews responding to over 1,150 emergencies since the start of 2025, ZEPA1 has remained unused. The original plan was for the electric fire engine to be shadowed by a diesel appliance during its initial year on real calls, but this never materialised.
Questions are now being raised about whether ZEPA1 represents a pioneering step forward or a costly investment with little practical benefit. The vehicle’s supplier, Emergency One, has not commented on its current status or any technical issues.
Meanwhile, the London Fire Brigade maintains that proactive testing of ZEPA1 continues and that lessons learned are being shared with other fire services across the UK.
Environmental Progress Despite Setbacks
While ZEPA1’s deployment remains stalled, London Fire Brigade has made progress in greening its fleet by switching all officer vehicles to electric models, including the rollout of VW ID.3 cars as part of its 2024 sustainability goals.
Looking Ahead
With electric vehicle technology advancing rapidly, there are concerns that ZEPA1 could become outdated before it is fully operational. Calls are increasing for London Fire Brigade and City Hall to provide a transparent update and clear plans for the future of the zero emission fire engine.
