Tragedy struck near London Bridge on Friday, 29 November, when a terror attack resulted in two fatalities and three people seriously injured. The stabbing incident occurred just before 2pm.
Police were dispatched to a premises close to London Bridge, EC1, following reports of a stabbing at 1.58pm. Emergency services, including the Metropolitan Police and City of London officers, responded swiftly to the scene.
Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu confirmed, “At approximately 2pm, police responded to a stabbing near London Bridge. A male suspect was shot dead by specialist armed officers at the scene.” Several victims sustained injuries during the attack. Basu also noted that the suspect had a device strapped to him, which was later confirmed to be a hoax explosive.
The police have declared the stabbing a terrorist incident, with the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command now leading the investigation. Basu stated, “We responded as though it was terror-related, and continue to keep an open mind about the motive. Extensive cordons remain in place, and we urge the public to avoid the area for safety.”
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick expressed her heartbreak and anger over the attack. “I am deeply saddened that our city has again been targeted by terrorism,” she said. She confirmed that two victims have died, while three others remain hospitalised with serious injuries.
Commissioner Dick added, “The attack started at Fishmongers’ Hall, and police confronted the suspect within five minutes of the call. We are working round the clock to support the victims and their families, and to understand if anyone else was involved.”
She praised emergency services and members of the public who showed courage during the incident and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with police.
