Human remains were found in Salford’s Kersal Dale nature reserve, prompting a murder investigation by Greater Manchester Police.
Yesterday evening, at approximately 5:50 pm, a member of the public discovered an item wrapped in plastic near the Kersal Wetlands. A pathologist later confirmed the item contained human remains, and survival for the victim was deemed impossible.
Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team immediately launched a murder probe following the discovery.
The identity of the victim remains unknown. Officers are working urgently to notify the next of kin and provide support to the grieving family during this difficult time.
Forensic teams have cordoned off a large woodland area within the nature reserve as they conduct a thorough search of the scene. So far, no arrests have been made, according to a GMP spokesperson.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes from GMP’s Serious Crime Division has urged local residents to come forward with any information, particularly if they noticed any suspicious behaviour around Kersal Dale in recent days.
“I want to assure the local community that although this is a disturbing and unsettling find, we have a large visible presence in the area to complete enquiries, provide reassurance and to listen to any concerns,” Hughes said.
“Anyone who may have relevant information is encouraged to speak to these officers. There will be a family who have lost a loved one, and we want to make sure they are supported as quickly as possible. Anyone who thinks they may have witnessed something suspicious in the Kersal Dale area could be key to unlocking what happened.”
