Emergency services have responded to a major incident at Crossmount House, a 64-metre-tall tower block on Wyndenham Road, Camberwell, following a rupture of a gas main that flooded the building with gas.
A controlled evacuation is currently underway, with 22 floors being evacuated as police and rescue teams act swiftly to ensure residents’ safety.
Officers are coordinating with local authorities to establish emergency rest centres for those displaced by the evacuation. At the same time, engineers are working on site to carry out urgent repairs to secure the gas leak and restore safety to the building.
Authorities have officially declared a major incident. Multiple fire crews and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) from the London Ambulance Service have been deployed to the scene. Firefighters are venting the building to clear the gas and reduce the risk of further danger.
The public is strongly advised to avoid the area as nearby roads have been closed, resulting in significant traffic disruptions. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes to prevent delays.
The Metropolitan Police have been contacted for comment as the situation continues to develop.
