A man from Cowes on the Isle of Wight died in his prison cell just hours before he was due to be released, it has been confirmed. Sami Benning, also known as Samuel Groves, was found dead at HM Prison Guys Marsh in Shaftesbury on Monday morning.
Benning was expected to walk free that very morning and return to the Isle of Wight. However, prison staff discovered his body in his cell overnight, which led to immediate police involvement.
A police spokesman said, “We can confirm that a body was found on Monday morning. It was a man in his cell. He died overnight and was found this morning in his cell.”
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for later today and will be conducted by a Home Office pathologist to determine the cause of death.
The Ministry of Justice has stated that the death will be thoroughly investigated by the Prison Service Ombudsman. Further details will be released as the inquiry progresses.
