Police safely ended a tense armed incident at a Goring house late Saturday night. Officers were called just before midnight to a property on Maybridge Crescent following reports that a man was breaking in with a handgun.
Inside the house were two women and four children. Police quickly contained the scene and helped them exit safely. The women suffered minor cuts but refused hospital treatment.
Neighbours near the property were temporarily moved to a police station for safety as officers attempted to negotiate with the man inside. He refused to come out until 3:48am, when he appeared at the door but ignored police commands. Officers then deployed a taser to secure his arrest.
The suspect was taken to Worthing Hospital for a medical check before being held in custody. He faces charges including burglary, assault, and firearms offences.
Police discovered the firearm was an imitation handgun. Several knives were also recovered from the premises.
District Commander Chief Inspector Miles Ockwell said: “This was a very serious incident. Our priority was the safety of those at risk, and we managed to minimise harm for everyone involved. We now hand him over to the Criminal Justice system. We thank nearby residents for their patience during the disturbance.”
