Hampshire Police Crack Down on Bad Eyesight Behind the Wheel
Officers from the Hampshire Roads Policing Unit swooped on a crash scene in Eastleigh. They quickly carried out a roadside eyesight test on one of the drivers — an 81-year-old man — who shockingly failed to spot a number plate at the mandatory 20-metre distance.
Strict DVLA Vision Rules Catch Out Elderly Motorist
According to DVLA regulations, if you need glasses or contact lenses to meet legal eyesight standards, you must wear them every time you drive. Drivers must also inform the DVLA if they have eye problems affecting both eyes (or the remaining eye if they only have one).
This doesn’t cover common issues like short or long sightedness or colour blindness. Plus, if you had surgery to correct vision but still meet standards, no need to report it.
Licence Revoked On The Spot
Hampshire Police said: “We attended an RTC earlier today in Eastleigh. An 81-year-old male involved failed a roadside eyesight test and his driving licence was revoked by the DVLA at the roadside immediately. Not nice to do but required to help keep roads safer.”
