Guests on the Carnival Splendor were left cold and confused after receiving an emotionless letter following two tragic deaths at sea. The official notice bizarrely skipped over the crucial fact behind a desperate search and rescue operation.
Cryptic Cruise Notice Sparks Fury
Over the weekend, passengers onboard the Australian-flagged Carnival Splendour received a letter titled “Important information” informing them the ship would be delayed arriving in Sydney. It stated: “The ship is currently involved in a search and rescue operation and will be delayed arriving into Sydney.” The letter continued: “We are currently working on revised timing and will be back in touch later this afternoon with further details.” Passengers were also warned not to head to the cruise terminal until further notice. But the letter, sent by VP Guest Services Colleen Olivero, made no mention of why the operation was underway. It failed to reveal that the crew was desperately searching for an elderly man who had gone overboard the previous day, sparking outrage that passengers were kept in the dark.
Man in 70s ‘Jumped Overboard’ Near Moreton Island
The missing man, believed to be in his 70s, reportedly climbed over the safety railing and plunged into the sea near Moreton Island, northeast of Brisbane, on Friday night. The incident followed just hours after another passenger tragically drowned during a snorkelling excursion. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), with Queensland Police, launched a massive search involving five helicopters, six surface vessels and Challenger jets to locate him. After 24 hours, AMSA called off the search on Saturday evening. A spokesperson said: “Following an intensive air and sea search involving multiple assets, the missing person was not located and AMSA has now released all assets from tasking.”
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the man’s family alerted crew to his disappearance, and CCTV footage showed his deliberate jump. A spokeswoman said:
“Carnival will assist authorities in their investigation upon the ship’s return to Sydney. Our Care Team is supporting the guest’s family – our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.”
Second Death Casts Shadow Over Cruise
The man’s disappearance occurred just hours after a 67-year-old Tasmanian woman drowned while snorkelling near the shipwrecks at Moreton Island. Despite heroic efforts by an off-duty lifesaver to pull her ashore, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A coroner’s report is pending. The two heartbreaking incidents are not believed to be connected.
Delayed Arrival Amid Tragedy
The Carnival Splendour finally docked at Sydney Harbour around 6pm on Sunday, hours later than scheduled, leaving many passengers shocked and upset over the handling of the situation. The cold, vague letter from cruise staff avoided the full truth, adding insult to injury for guests processing the tragic events at sea.
