Spider-Man Star Andrew Garfield Takes Aim at JK Rowling in Trans Debate

Andrew Garfield, famed for his role as Spider-Man, has reignited the JK Rowling transgender row. While applauding the “beautiful artists” behind the Harry Potter films, he took a not-so-subtle dig at Rowling herself during a recent podcast.

Garfield Slams Rowling Over ‘Inhumane Legislation’ Support

Speaking on the My Life In Movies podcast, Garfield praised the films but added: “The films are really good. I know it’s controversial and we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now, through… she who shall remain nameless.”

The jab clearly targeted Rowling due to her support for groups like For Women Scotland. These groups influenced a landmark 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling defining “woman” strictly by biological sex. Garfield admitted he finds it hard to fully back the franchise because of Rowling’s stance.

Potter Cast Divided Over Rowling’s Views

Garfield’s comments highlight a deep rift within the Harry Potter cast. Most leading stars have distanced themselves from Rowling’s outspoken transgender views. Only a handful – including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, John Cleese, and Tom Felton – have openly defended her. These actors had established their careers before Potter made them household names.

Meanwhile, several cast members who made their names through the franchise haven’t held back on criticising Rowling.

Harry Potter Empire Survives Despite Backlash

Despite the turmoil, the Harry Potter brand stays as strong as ever. A new TV series is slated to drop on HBO in late 2026, proving the wizarding world’s magic refuses to fade – no matter the controversies swirling around it.
