UK Courts Warship Response After Iranian Drone Strikes RAF Base

Britain is scrambling to boost security at its Cyprus military base after a brazen Iranian drone strike targeted RAF Akrotiri. With France and Greece already beefing up defences, London is locked in urgent talks about sending a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer, HMS Duncan, to the island.

Defence Secretary John Healey has been in nonstop discussions as ministers actively “consider” deploying the warship to protect Britain’s sovereign territory amid rising tensions.

Allies Race to Reinforce Cyprus Defences

The mood is grim as allies respond fast to Cyprus’s plea for protection. French President Emmanuel Macron sent two warships to guard the base. Greece upped the ante by dispatching four F-16 jets and two frigates, including one fitted with the Centauros anti-drone jamming system.

This cutting-edge tech has been battle-tested against Houthi drones in Yemen and is designed to spot and disable low-flying drones — just like those that struck RAF Akrotiri.

Drone Strike Hits Dangerously Close to British Troops

The Iranian-made Shahed drone slammed within 800 yards of UK personnel, damaging the runway. Two more drones were shot down later that day. Cypriot officials say Hezbollah likely launched the attack from Lebanon, making the British base—not Cypriot soil—the prime target.

“The intended target was the British base itself rather than Cypriot territory,” a senior Cypriot official confirmed.

Pressure Mounts on Starmer Over Cyprus Crisis

The strike comes after Britain agreed to let US forces use Cyprus as a base for “defensive” operations against Iran amid escalating US-Israeli tensions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer denies US bombers have flown from Cyprus, but demands are rising for Britain to limit base use strictly to humanitarian missions.

Starmer now faces mounting pressure to protect UK personnel while managing a delicate dance with President Joe Biden in a volatile region. The decision on whether to send HMS Duncan is expected in the coming days as the crisis unfolds.
