Humber Bridge Goes Fully Automated – But Toll Troubles Spark Fury

The Humber Bridge has switched off the manned toll booths and gone fully automated. But drivers are hitting major snags with the new system, sparking chaos and confusion all round.

Free-Flow Toll Launch Hits Bumpy Road

On Monday 2 February, the iconic bridge ditched the old booth system in favour of free-flow tolling, designed to speed up journeys. But a buggy app launch and a glitchy website left many drivers banging their heads. Payment issues and tech troubles have caused a backlash from frustrated motorists.

Bridge Bosses Admit App Delays – Working Flat Out

A Humber Bridge Board spokesperson blamed problems “beyond control” for the delayed app rollout. They insisted all functions — including account setup and toll payments — are fully live on the website now.

“We’re working hard to get the app up and running ASAP,” the official said.

How to Pay and Get Help

  • Pay online via the Humber Bridge website — all features have been restored.
  • Phone payments or pre-pay at local shops with PayPoint.
  • For assistance, ring 01482 235500 or the new helpline on 02046 468929.

Officials admit some drivers struggled to get through to customer service at first, but they’ve added extra phone lines to ease the pressure.

“We’re aware of some challenges contacting us and have launched an additional phone number to assist,” they said.

Drivers caught up in the new toll system confusion can now get quick help by calling the numbers above. It’s fingers crossed for a smoother ride ahead.
