Tragic Crash Claims Life of Beloved ‘Big Chris’ Bottoms
Christopher Bottoms, 66, died in a horror two-car smash on Ship Road at 11.05pm on January 20. The crash involved his Kia Picanto and a Mini Cooper.
‘Big Chris’ – The Man Everyone Loved
Known as ‘Big Chris’ for his huge heart and larger-than-life personality, Christopher Bottoms was impossible to dislike. The devoted dad, husband, and son was “immensely popular” with family and friends.
“Chris was a loving and caring father, husband and son. There are no words that would do him justice when trying to describe him,” said his family.
Chris served 30 years with the Metropolitan Police before turning to London black-cab driving. He retired fully in 2020 and loved travelling the world with family. A keen sports fan, he regularly cheered his sons at Upminster Cricket Club and backed Sheppey United FC – often finishing nights off with his favourite local curry.
Family Left Reeling by Devastating Loss
Chris was devoted to his wife Denise, sons Alex and Will, and his mother Sylv. They enjoyed countless moments playing cards, watching quiz shows, golfing, and sharing his famous home-cooked meals.
“His quick wit and sense of humour will be deeply missed. Chris had the unique ability to make anyone feel safe and calm, always ready with solid advice,” the family added.
The family paid tribute to emergency crews and hospital staff for their care and for allowing them precious time to say goodbye.
Second Victim Named After Deadly Smash
The other vehicle, a Mini Cooper, carried 18-year-old passenger George Herd, who died at the scene.
Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is probing the crash. They urge anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or other footage to come forward.
