Deputy PM David Lammy: Flags Must Be Symbols of Pride, Not Hate

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has fired a warning shot over Britain’s flag frenzy. He insists national flags must never be “appropriated by hoodlums, hooligans and fascists.” His tough words come as waves of St George’s Cross flags sweep across the country, sparking fierce debates.

Lammy, doubling as Justice Secretary, spoke out after dozens of flags were yanked from lampposts along the A1198 near Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, where councils are cracking down on what they call problematic flag campaigns.

“We cannot let any of our nation’s flags be appropriated by hoodlums, hooligans and fascists,” Lammy told ITV News. “I wear the flag very proudly, especially at football or cricket matches.”

He recalled the pride of watching British sporting heroes wave the flag as a kid. “That’s how I see my Britishness and Englishness. I want all children, whatever their background, to feel just as confident.”

Starmer Visits Mosque Hit by Arson, Pledges £10m Security Boost

On the same day, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made a show of solidarity at Peacehaven Mosque in East Sussex, badly damaged in a suspected arson attack on 4 October. Miraculously, no one was hurt despite extensive damage.

During his visit, Starmer refused to rule out ending official backing for St George’s flags hanging from lampposts, admitting some flag displays by a vocal minority are divisive.

“I’m very proud of that flag, and it’s really important that we don’t surrender our flag to anyone,” he said. “Those who use the flag to divide are devaluing it.”

Police have arrested three men over the mosque fire. Starmer also unveiled a £10 million package to boost security at Muslim faith centres, including CCTV, alarms, and fencing.

“Attacks on any community are attacks on our entire nation and values,” Starmer declared. “This funding ensures Muslim communities can live in peace and safety.”

Flag Wars Erupt Amid Hate Crime Surge and Political Feuds

The national flag row has erupted with the grassroots “Operation Raise the Colours” campaign urging Brits to wave Union Jacks and St George’s Cross on public sites. Since launching in August, it has ignited fiery debates over patriotism, racism, and identity.

Local councils from Cambridgeshire to Liverpool have ripped down many flags, citing safety and public order. This sparked accusations of double standards, especially after Palestinian flags remained untouched.

Critics warn far-right groups have hijacked the campaign. Watchdogs like Hope Not Hate point to links with extremist outfits like the English Defence League and Britain First.

One North Yorkshire supply teacher lost his job after erecting about 150 flags in his hometown of Thirsk. The council cited health and safety risks and threatened to charge him for removal costs.

Former Tory MP Ranil Jayawardena blasted the crackdown: “No one should be stopped from teaching just for holding centre-right views.”

Starmer Slams Tories for Divisiveness, Defends Multicultural Britain

Starmer didn’t hold back on condemning Tory MP Katie Lam’s calls to deport lawfully settled families to preserve cultural “coherence.”

“I can’t tell you how much I disagree with her,” he told ITV. “People lawfully here who contribute to communities shouldn’t be kicked out for cultural reasons. That’s how far the Conservative Party has sunk.”

The PM linked the divisive flag tactics to a recent spate of attacks on places of worship—including the Peacehaven mosque arson and deadly Manchester synagogue assault.

Hate Crimes Soar as Flag Tensions Stir National Identity Struggles

Government data reveals a 19% surge in anti-Muslim hate crimes in the year ending March 2025, with Muslims facing 44% of all religious hate offences.

Akeela Ahmed, British Muslim Trust chief, warned: “Too many Muslim communities live in fear as mosques are vandalised, set on fire, and worshippers attacked.”

As the flag battle rages on, supporters claim the displays show pure patriotic pride. Opponents see them as weapons of exclusion and intimidation.

The government faces a tough balancing act—reclaiming the flag’s meaning from extremists while tackling real concerns about these symbols being twisted to spread division.
