Ex-Met Police Officer Faces Shocking Sex Crime Charges

A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, 55, has been hit with a string of serious criminal charges following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Multiple Charges Include Rape and Sexual Assault

On Tuesday, 13 August, Tyrrell was charged via postal requisition with a host of offences, including:

  • Two counts of rape
  • 11 counts of sexual assault
  • Four counts of sexual assault by penetration
  • Three counts of perverting the course of justice
  • One count of misconduct in public office

Suspended After Arrest, Facing Court in September

Tyrrell was immediately suspended following his arrest, which triggered an IOPC investigation on 18 April 2023. The case was declared an independent inquiry just days later.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 1 and 4 September to face the charges.

Concerns Raised Over Tyrrell’s High-Profile Role

What makes this case particularly alarming is Tyrrell’s previous position within the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, responsible for safeguarding some of the UK’s most sensitive locations and figures.

Both the Metropolitan Police and IOPC vow to uphold strict standards and deal firmly with any misconduct.

More updates will follow as the story unfolds.
