Six Fire Crews Battle Basement Blaze at Iconic Croydon Tower
Firefighters rushed to an intense blaze tearing through the basement of the famous No. 1 Croydon tower late Sunday night. Six fire engines and around 35 firefighters were scrambled just after 11pm to tackle the well-developed fire in the 24-storey block on Addiscombe Road, next to East Croydon station.
‘Wedding Cake’ Tower Goes Up in Smoke Underground
The fire erupted in the underground basement of No. 1 Croydon, also known as the NLA Tower or the “50p Building.” The 269-foot high skyscraper, completed in 1970 by Richard Seifert & Partners, houses major companies like Atkins, Directline Holidays, Dotdigital, and Global Resourcing.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Emergency services have set road closures around the area to aid firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations continue. London Fire Brigade has been contacted for updates.
