Radio Icon James Whale Dies Aged 74 After Brave Cancer Fight
Legendary Broadcaster Bows Out
Radio star and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant James Whale has passed away at 74 after a long battle with cancer. The outspoken TalkTV and talkRADIO host died peacefully in hospice care, having told loved ones just hours earlier he was “happy to go now.”
His close friend and colleague Mike Graham paid tribute live on TalkTV, saying:
“James Whale broke the rules, shaped the airwaves, and did it all on his own terms. For millions, James wasn’t just a broadcaster. He was a companion, a provocateur, and a good friend that we’ll all never forget.”
Radio Maverick With Five-Decade Career
James kicked off his radio career in 1974 at Metro Radio, pioneering the late-night shock jock phone-in show. By the late ’80s, his James Whale Radio Show was a national sensation, simulcast on ITV with over a million viewers every Friday night.
Known for his fearless style and sharp wit, James hosted shows across ITV, Sky, the BBC, and later TalkRadio and TalkTV. In 2016, he entertained a new generation on Celebrity Big Brother, showing off his candid charm and razor-sharp humour.
Fought Cancer Twice, Championed Charity
James first faced kidney cancer in 2000 but recovered after surgery, inspiring him to launch Kidney Cancer UK. The charity has since raised hundreds of thousands for research and support.
Tragically, the disease returned in 2020, spreading to his spine, brain, and lungs. Ever open, James shared his journey with fans, urging early detection and awareness.
His lifelong contributions earned him an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours.
Heartfelt Tributes Flood In
TalkTV’s Richard Wallace said:
“There are legends – and then there’s James Whale. This award is a fitting acknowledgment of a maverick talent who has entertained TV and radio audiences with inimitable style for more than 50 years.”
Dennie Morris, Director of Audio at News Broadcasting, added:
“James was not only a giant of radio and television, but one of the loveliest men I’ve ever met. His contribution to the industry and charity has been remarkable.”
Family and Lasting Legacy
James is survived by his wife, Nadine Lamont-Brown, whom he married in 2021, and his two sons, James and Peter. His first wife, Melinda Maxted, sadly died of cancer in 2018.
His razor wit, unique voice, and bold presence left an indelible mark on British broadcasting. James Whale’s passing ends an era, but his legacy lives on in the millions he entertained and inspired.
