Brave Rescue Mission Saves Injured Rabbit from Lewes Priory Ruins
Rabbit Trapped in Historic Ruins
An injured rabbit was stranded on a ledge beneath ground level at Lewes Priory ruins on 29 July. Passersby spotted the distressed hare but it couldn’t escape the tricky, enclosed spot.
Firefighters Team Up with Wildlife Rescuers
Volunteers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) rushed to help, but their teams were tied up elsewhere. The rabbit’s location was too dangerous for WRAS to reach alone.
East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service answered the call. Firefighters used specialist ladders and animal rescue gear from WRAS to safely retrieve the rabbit.
Founder Pays Tribute to Team Effort
“The rabbit looked injured and possibly visually impaired, which probably led to it falling into the ruins,” said Trevor Weeks MBE, WRAS founder. “Thanks to the fire service’s quick and professional help, we secured it safely and took it for urgent vet care.”
The rabbit is now in WRAS’s care, being treated and monitored to decide its recovery prospects.
Wildlife Charity Appeals for Support
WRAS praised the fire crew and stressed the power of teamwork in rescues. Weeks added, “We’re very grateful to East Sussex Fire & Rescue. Without them, this rescue couldn’t have happened.”
With call-outs piling up, WRAS urgently needs donations to keep saving wildlife. Support their life-saving work at www.wildlifeambulance.org.
