Eurovision 2025 Kicks Off with Cringe Opening Bombshell!
The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 launched in startling fashion — but not in a good way.
Live from St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland on Saturday night (May 17), the Grand Final featured 26 countries battling for Eurovision glory. But instead of cheers, the opening moments sparked a tidal wave of online groans.
Twitter Trolls Slam ‘Cringe’ Hosts
Presenters Hazel Brugger, Michelle Hunziker, and Sandra Studer kicked off with a pre-recorded segment that seemed to fall flat. Viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) in droves, roasting the awkward intro:
- “Why are the presenters always cringe? #Eurovision”
- “Awful cringe hosting but loving the randomness of the hosts’ costumes #Eurovision”
- Simply put by one fan: “Cringe opening. #Eurovision.”
- “Why are the intros always so awkward?” echoed another.
How to Watch Eurovision in the UK
Despite the rocky start, Eurovision 2025 is pulling in the crowds. UK viewers can catch all the action live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, Radio 2, and BBC Sounds.
Longtime commentator Graham Norton returned to the booth, serving his trademark wit and sharp insights throughout the night.
Graham Norton’s Double Duty Drama
Eurovision veteran Norton had a busy Saturday. Earlier, he made a surprise cameo on BBC’s “Doctor Who” during the “Super Saturday” event. He appeared as a hologram warning Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor of an apocalyptic threat — then swapped sci-fi for song as Eurovision’s top commentator.
Norton has been Eurovision’s voice in the UK since taking over from the late Terry Wogan in 2009, despite some grumbles over the live show’s presentation.
Eurovision 2025: Cringe or Classic?
The awkward opening has set social media alight, but the buzz only fuels excitement for the rest of the contest. Fans across Europe and beyond are glued to the screen, eager for the trademark glitz, drama, and show-stopping performances that make Eurovision a global spectacle.
