RSPCA Launches Urgent Hunt After Wood Pigeon Shot with Catapult in Essex

Disturbing Cruelty Shocks South Ockendon

A wood pigeon was found bleeding and badly injured after being shot with a catapult in South Ockendon, Essex. The bird was discovered at around 3pm on January 24, on Dene Path near Dilkes Park.

A passerby rushed the pigeon to South Essex Wildlife Hospital, where X-rays revealed a ball bearing lodged inside its wing – clear evidence of a catapult attack.

Sadly, the injuries were so severe the poor bird had to be euthanised.

Man in Dark Camouflage Sought for Questioning

The RSPCA is appealing for help to track down a man spotted near the scene. Described as a slim man in his late 30s with facial stubble, he was last seen wearing a dark camouflage jacket and black tracksuit bottoms.

Deputy Chief Inspector Emma Beynon called the incident “very distressing,” especially since it happened in a public spot.

“This upsetting incident took place in a public place and would have been a very distressing incident to witness,” she said. “We’d like to thank the caring person who took the pigeon to a vet and those who have helped so far. However, we are looking for anyone with first-hand information which could help our enquiries.”
