Homeless asylum seeker dies trapped in empty Walthamstow home
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Walthamstow as Khaled Aribi, a 32-year-old homeless Algerian asylum seeker, was found dead after being trapped trying to break into a vacant house. The inquest revealed he succumbed to starvation and dehydration after being stuck for nearly a week.
Trapped in Skylight: Grim Discovery
On July 27, 2024, an estate agent arriving for a viewing on Hatherley Road made the chilling discovery. Mr Aribi was found hanging from a skylight, trapped by his fingers caught between the glass pane and the stone ceiling.
Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe described the circumstances as “somewhat unusual.” She explained, “The deceased male was hanging from a skylight in the ceiling.” Evidence showed small stones around the skylight, confirming it was his intended point of entry as all other doors and windows were locked.
CCTV Footage Reveals Desperate Attempt
Police identified Mr Aribi through fingerprints. CCTV footage captured him climbing over the garden wall six days before his body was found.
The post-mortem confirmed death caused by dehydration, starvation, and ketoacidosis—a dangerous acid build-up linked to malnourishment. Toxicology revealed cocaine and Pregabalin, a psychiatric medication, in his system at the time of death.
A Vulnerable Life Cut Short
Mr Aribi was homeless and living in Camden, known to mental health services and under the care of the Camden and Islington Mental Health Team in late 2023. Diagnosed with mixed anxiety and depression, he was waiting for counselling and identified as a “very vulnerable adult” at risk of sexual exploitation.
His mental health issues were linked to traumatic experiences in Algeria, his homeland, where he sought asylum.
“This was a deeply tragic accident involving a vulnerable individual who had been struggling with mental health issues and homelessness,” said Coroner Dr Radcliffe. “He died alone, in desperate circumstances.”
Coroner Rules Death an Accident
The inquest concluded Mr Aribi’s death was an accident caused by entrapment leading to his fatal dehydration and starvation.
A Stark Warning on Homelessness and Mental Health
This tragedy shines a harsh light on the dangers faced by vulnerable homeless individuals, especially asylum seekers battling mental health problems. Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, called for urgent improvement in support systems.
“This heartbreaking case highlights the extreme vulnerability faced by asylum seekers and the urgent need for better access to housing, mental health services, and community support,” said a Shelter spokesperson.
