Family of Five Stranded on Sheppey Cliffs as Tide Cuts Off Escape

A family of five faced a terrifying ordeal after becoming trapped on the perilous cliffs at Warden Point, Sheppey, on Friday afternoon. Rising tides cut off their escape route, leaving them stranded with no way back to safety.

Parents and Three Kids Trapped by Rising Waters

The family, made up of two parents and three children, had been enjoying a day at the beach. When the tide began to surge, they scrambled up the slippery, treacherous clay cliffs to avoid the water. But their climb came to an abrupt halt, leaving them stuck and unable to climb any higher.

RNLI and Coastguard Mount Dramatic Cliff Rescue

Andy Williams, helmsman of the RNLI Whitstable lifeboat Lewisco, recounted the tense rescue: “The family had climbed partway up the cliff as the tide was right up to its base. The Sheppey Coastguard team was ready to carry out a rope rescue from above when the lifeboat arrived.”

Due to hidden boulders beneath the water, the lifeboat had to approach with extreme caution. Crew member Vicky Kypta bravely went ashore to assist the stranded family onto the lifeboat. Thankfully, all five were unharmed and brought safely back to Leysdown Beach where the coastguard awaited to help.

Safety Warning Issued After Narrow Escape

Andy Williams urged visitors to exercise caution around Warden Point: “Our advice is always to be aware of tide times, weather, and local conditions, especially near cliffs like those here.”

Warden Point’s cliffs become dangerously unstable after rain. The muddy terrain poses a real risk of slips and falls. While the area is a hotspot for fossil hunters, experts warn the incoming tide can swiftly trap beachgoers. Planning visits around low tide is essential to avoid a repeat of this close call.
