Police Sergeant’s Night of Horror: Knife Crime Nightmare in Swindon
In the dead of night back in 2012, Police Sergeant Tom Ashforth faced the brutal reality of knife crime. Then a PC, Ashforth was among the first officers to arrive at a vicious stabbing in Swindon. The victim lay bleeding, stabbed multiple times, and Ashforth’s adrenaline kicked in as he fought to save a life.
Tragic Loss and Lasting Impact
Despite desperate efforts by Ashforth, his colleagues, and emergency services, the victim didn’t make it. The tragedy left him haunted by the senseless loss. “A person lost their life at the hands of another,” Ashforth said, “which is always a needless tragedy for everyone involved.” He’s still affected by the ripple effect the crime had on families and the community.
Knife Crime Battle Ramps Up in Swindon
Now serving as the Neighbourhood Sergeant for Stratton, Central Swindon North, and West, Ashforth is front and centre of the fight against knife crime. Speaking during the national Sceptre campaign, designed to raise awareness and tackle weapon carrying head-on, he reveals how Wiltshire Police are cracking down hard.
- Targeting hot spots and suspects
- Using knife arches to catch hidden weapons
- Running community intervention programmes
First Aid and Awareness: Ashforth’s Call to Action
Ashforth stresses the vital importance of first aid training for officers and civilians alike, hoping quick action can save lives in future attacks. He urges parents to have frank talks with their kids about the dangers of knives and weapon carrying.
“We don’t want carrying weapons to become normal – it has to stop for everyone’s sake,” Ashforth warns. “If you carry a knife or hang around those who do, chances are you’ll end up involved in serious harm, or worse.”
With Wiltshire Police intensifying programmes to keep communities safe, Ashforth makes one thing clear: there’s zero tolerance for knife crime in Swindon – and the fight is far from over.
