Brutal Night Attack in Colchester: Man Left with Lifelong Injuries
Jordan Pope viciously attacked a man in his 20s outside Culver Street West just before 2am on 24 July last year. The 25-year-old, out with friends, punched the victim to the ground and stamped repeatedly on his head as he tried to get up—leaving him unconscious in the street.
Victim Left Scarred and With Permanent Hearing Loss
The victim’s brother, present at the scene, was also assaulted by members of Pope’s group. The victim suffered serious head injuries and, although he has thankfully recovered, he now lives with large scars and permanent hearing loss in one ear. Both brothers continue to struggle with the trauma of the attack.
Pope and his gang fled but were spotted on CCTV roaming the city shortly afterwards. Some were chased by security staff near North Hill but managed to escape.
Justice Served: Pope Jailed for Over Five Years
Fast police work led to multiple arrests. Two accomplices, Finley Taylor and Lewis Dawson, admitted assaulting the victim’s brother and were handed 12-week prison sentences suspended for 12 months, plus 100 hours of unpaid work.
Pope was charged with GBH with intent and assault. He pleaded guilty at Ipswich Crown Court on 16 February 2023 and was sentenced on 26 April to five years and two months behind bars. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence.
Judge Emma Peters described the attack as “vicious” causing “serious and almost catastrophic injuries” that will affect the victim for life.
Family and Police Praise Brave Public and Door Staff
“We are eternally grateful to Colchester CID for their tireless work in bringing Pope to justice,” said the victim’s family. “Thanks also to the members of the public and security staff at Walkabout and Hudson’s Bar who bravely stepped in that night. Their quick actions and first aid skills likely saved our son’s life.”
“Getting the call to say our sons were in hospital was every parent’s nightmare. One even needed life-saving brain surgery. Trauma like this is unimaginable, but the kindness shown by strangers gave us hope and kept our family together.”
