Driver Jailed After Fatal Swindon Crash Kills Beloved Grandad
Alexander Baker, 26, has been sentenced for causing death by careless driving following a tragic collision on Highworth Road, Swindon.
Careless Turn Claims Life of 66-Year-Old Motorcyclist
Baker, from Sparcells, appeared at Swindon Crown Court last week. He pled guilty to causing the death of 66-year-old Jack Robson by careless driving. He also admitted involvement in supplying class A drugs.
The fatal crash happened on May 25, 2020. Baker, driving a white Mitsubishi ASX, attempted a right turn across two lanes. Jack Robson, riding a Yamaha motorcycle, had to brake hard but smashed into Baker’s car. He died instantly at the scene.
Police and Family Speak Out on Heartbreaking Loss
Detective Constable Rachel Catling said: “This collision took place during the height of the initial lockdown. Mr Robson was visiting a family member to provide care before heading home on his motorbike. Baker’s careless failure to check the road before turning led to this tragedy.”
“Members of the public tried to give first aid, but sadly Jack’s injuries were fatal. This has been a long investigation for all involved. My thoughts are with the family at this terrible time.”
Wife’s Emotional Tribute to Husband Taken Too Soon
Jack’s widow Christine gave a heartbreaking statement to the court:
“Jack’s love for bikes was lifelong, and it was a passion we shared. That morning, I kissed him goodbye as usual and said ‘be safe’. He told me, ‘Don’t worry about me, I’m always safe. I’ll see you later.’”
“That day destroyed my life. Our family is utterly devastated. We had been married 45 years and still had so much to look forward to.”
“My whole world has been ripped apart. Why was such a caring, wonderful man taken from us? I can’t cope without Jack. The tears and anger never stop.”
Sentence Passed: Driving Ban and Community Order
Baker received a 12-month driving ban and a 12-month community order. He must complete 300 hours of unpaid work as part of his sentence.
