A massive fire has broken out in a disused commercial building in Kingston town centre, prompting a major emergency response with around 150 firefighters and 15 fire engines deployed to the scene.

The blaze erupted at approximately 2:20pm on Richmond Road, a key route into the town centre, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and causing widespread disruption in the area.

Residents Urged to Stay Indoors

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has urged residents living nearby to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke and has advised the public to avoid the area while firefighting efforts continue.

Station Commander Will Thompson, leading the response, said:

“Crews are making steady progress in tackling the fire. We urge people to avoid the area to help reduce disruption and to assist emergency services in carrying out their work.”

Firefighters Use High-Rise Equipment

Fire crews are using two 32-metre turntable ladders as observation towers to assist in monitoring and controlling the fire from above. The extent of damage to the building is not yet fully known.

Road Closures and Travel Disruption

Kingston Council has warned of heavy traffic delays along Richmond Road, which leads into the heart of Kingston. Multiple bus routes have been placed on diversion, including the 65, 111, 281, 285, 411, and SL7.
