People smuggling gang smashed after migrant-packed yacht crashes off Sussex coast

Yacht Crash Exposes Ruthless Smuggling Ring

In a dramatic bust, UK authorities have taken down a brutal people smuggling ring that funneled hundreds of migrants into Britain. The operation came unstuck after a yacht carrying 14 migrants, including two children, ran aground near Rye in February 2022. The boat was packed with desperate travellers from Iran, Iraq, and Albania, who were swiftly detained by Border Force officers.

Smuggler ‘Hama Kalari’ Unmasked

Phone footage found during the investigation identified 37-year-old Mohammed Ali Nareman, from London, as the notorious smuggling mastermind known as “Hama Kalari.” Despite serious mental health issues ruling him unfit for trial, a Maidstone Crown Court jury confirmed he orchestrated multiple smuggling crimes. The court heard a trial of facts rather than a full criminal trial.

Vast European Trafficking Network Busted

Investigators linked Nareman to Ali Omar Karim, 47, from Portsmouth, who ran a sprawling trafficking operation across Europe. Migrants were ferried from Serbia, Turkey, Kosovo, Bosnia, Romania, and Hungary via small boats, trucks, and yachts. The National Crime Agency (NCA) seized phones packed with damning evidence — including maps of French and UK coastlines, photos of migrant passports, and videos showing off £50,000 in cash. One phone was cunningly hidden inside a child’s play tent loaded with incriminating messages.

Sky-High Prices, Chilling Cruelty

  • Migrants paid between £800 and £1,000 just to enter the EU.
  • Crossings into the UK cost from £1,650 soaring up to £24,000.

Karim’s phone revealed a botched smuggling attempt in Calais in November 2022, where two Iraqis were found hidden in a lorry. Disturbing voice notes showed the traffickers’ total lack of empathy — including a callous suggestion to kick an intoxicated passenger in the head and dump them in a dinghy.

Justice Set for January 2026

Karim was arrested in Portsmouth in March 2024 and pleaded guilty by June. Both Karim and Nareman will remain behind bars until sentencing on 8 January 2026.

Rachel Bramley from the NCA said: “Mohammed Ali Nareman was extremely prolific in the criminal world of people smuggling. His messages with Karim and others showed the group’s disdain for the people they transported – they were seen as nothing more than a commodity to make money from.

Tackling organised immigration crime remains a top priority for the NCA. We are currently leading around 100 investigations into the most harmful smuggling networks operating across Europe and the UK.”
