York Crown Court has sentenced Daniel Roberts, a 31-year-old man from Jorvik Close, York, to four years in prison following a detailed investigation into his possession and distribution of illegal images, including child abuse and extreme pornography.
Roberts, who had previously pleaded guilty to 18 related offences at a hearing on 19 November 2024, remained in custody until his sentencing. His case involved six charges, including distributing and making indecent images of children, possession of extreme pornographic material, and holding prohibited images of children.
Serious Offences, Serious Consequences
The court described Roberts’ crimes as “deeply disturbing,” reflecting the seriousness with which such offences are viewed by law enforcement and the judiciary. Alongside his prison sentence, Roberts has been ordered to serve an additional four years on licence upon release, meaning he will remain under close supervision for a total of eight years.
Investigators said the sentencing sends a clear message about the consequences of engaging in and facilitating child sexual abuse content online. The images found on Roberts’ devices were described in court as “extremely graphic and distressing,” with some falling into the most serious category of abuse.
No Rehabilitation Plan Disclosed
While the sentence aims to protect the public and provide a strong deterrent, there has been no public disclosure of a specific rehabilitation plan for Roberts. This has raised concerns among safeguarding advocates about the risk of reoffending once he is released from prison.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said:
“This conviction follows a robust and thorough investigation. We hope this result provides reassurance that offenders engaging in this criminal behaviour will be identified and prosecuted. The protection of children is a top priority.”
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
Authorities have also reiterated the importance of community awareness in combating online exploitation and abuse. Members of the public who suspect someone is involved in such activities are urged to report their concerns via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
Daniel Roberts will also be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and is expected to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which will restrict his access to internet-enabled devices and contact with minors following his release.
A Wake-Up Call
This case adds to a growing list of convictions secured through the efforts of specialist digital forensics and child protection teams. The investigation highlights the disturbing reach of online abuse and the urgent need for ongoing education, technology monitoring, and offender rehabilitation to protect children from harm.
