YMCA Thames Gateway Group has confirmed that its Romford gym on Rush Green Road was forced to close temporarily following a tragic incident on Thursday morning (May 2).
In a statement, the group revealed that a member died after suffering a “medical emergency” at the site. Despite the immediate efforts of residents, gym members, and staff to perform CPR — alongside the rapid response from emergency medical services — the individual sadly passed away.
A spokesperson for the YMCA said:
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the member’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Out of respect for the privacy of the individual and their family, we will not be releasing any further details at this time.”
Earlier in the day, YMCA Thames Gateway Group announced that the gym would reopen at 5.30am today (May 3), while classes and other services remained operational during the brief closure.
YMCA officials and the London Ambulance Service have been approached for further comment regarding the incident.
