Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of a baby boy at a home in Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire Police confirmed that a 26-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, both from Stoke-on-Trent, were detained by authorities on Tuesday.
The investigation began after West Midlands Ambulance Service alerted police to the baby’s death on August 27, 2024, at a property on Sherwin Road in Burslem. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9:09 am, where the baby boy was found deceased.
Initially, both suspects were arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child but were released on conditional bail while investigations continued. On Tuesday, the pair were rearrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being questioned by detectives.
Detective Inspector Gina Pope, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as “distressing” and acknowledged the shock it has caused within the local community. We are working to establish the circumstances around the baby’s death,” she said, urging the public to refrain from speculation on social media, which could cause additional distress to those involved.
Specialist officers are supporting the baby’s family as the investigation progresses.
Staffordshire Police have asked anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
