In a significant and unprecedented move, Kevin McCarthy, the most senior Republican in the US House of Representatives, has announced the commencement of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. McCarthy stated that the inquiry’s primary focus would be on “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption” related to the President.

The decision to launch a formal impeachment inquiry comes after months of Republicans investigating President Biden since they assumed control of the House in January. While these investigations have not unearthed concrete evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden, they have brought attention to the business dealings of the President’s only surviving son, Hunter Biden.

Republicans have raised questions about the propriety of Hunter Biden’s business activities and have sought to scrutinise President Biden’s awareness of his son’s endeavours.

This move signifies the initial step in a political process that could potentially culminate in an impeachment vote within the House of Representatives. If such a vote garners a simple majority, it would lead to a trial in the US Senate.

In his statement delivered at the US Capitol, McCarthy asserted that there were “serious and credible” allegations surrounding the President’s conduct and actions during his time in office.
