Leicestershire Police have launched an urgent public appeal after a cyclist was left seriously injured following a collision with an e-scooter in Leicester city centre.
The incident occurred around 3:45pm on Sunday, 16 March 2025, on Granby Street, a busy area frequented by cyclists and pedestrians. The cyclist sustained a head injury, concussion, and damage to the neck and back, requiring hospital treatment.
The e-scooter rider reportedly briefly stopped at the scene but left without exchanging any details. Authorities are now searching for the rider, who could hold crucial information about the incident.
Police Investigation and Appeal
The incident was reported the following day and is now the subject of an active investigation. Leicestershire Police have released an image of a man they wish to identify in connection with the case.
PC Ryan Buckland said: "We are appealing to anyone who recognises the individual in the photo or who witnessed the incident to come forward. Your information could be vital."
Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting crime reference 25*178773, or report online via the Leicestershire Police website.
E-Scooter Safety Under Scrutiny
This collision has intensified growing concerns over e-scooter safety in UK urban areas. Data from the Department for Transport reveals a 20% rise in e-scooter-related incidents since 2022.
In response, Leicestershire Police launched Operation Pedalfast, which has led to the seizure of over 150 illegal e-scooters in the Leicester area. Under UK law, e-scooters are only legal on private land or as part of an approved rental scheme — yet misuse remains widespread.
Public Reaction
Social media users expressed outrage following news of the hit-and-run. One X user commented:
"E-scooters are a menace in Leicester. Speeding through crowds, no regard for safety."
Another called the incident "a wake-up call," demanding tougher enforcement and greater awareness.
