Updated after mans body recovered from the Thames in Surrey

Surrey Police received a call at around 00:15 from a member of the public reporting seeing a man entering the river Thames. Officers attended and searched the river, along with colleagues from Surrey Fire and Rescue service. The body of a man in his 60’s was recovered at around 02:00. Formal identification has not yet taken place. A man in his 40’s was arrested nearby, and is still in police custody. It is believed that the two men were known to each other. A post-mortem has concluded that the man died as a result of drowning. As previously reported An investigation is underway this morning (2 June), following the discovery of a man’s body in the River Thames at Shepperton. The body was discovered in the stretch of water alongside Russell Road, Shepperton at around 2am. Detective Chief Inspector Paddy Mayers said: “At this stage the deceased man has not been formally identified, and we are looking into the circumstances that led to him being found in the water. The team and I are focused on a number of enquiries to try and establish what has happened, and will be carrying out various searches in the area, as well as making house to house visits. We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in Shepperton last night, particularly between 10pm and 1am this morning.” Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Surrey Police immediately on 101, quoting P17133892. A 47 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with this ongoing investigation, however at this time officers are keeping an open mind into what may have occurred. Share
