Hartlepool town centre has descended into chaos as a protest has turned into a violent riot, drawing a significant police presence.
Reports are coming in of a protest in Hartlepool town centre, with squads of police attempting to break up the unrest. Riot police have been deployed to the area and are actively fighting back the crowd. Eyewitnesses describe a scene of turmoil, with men in balaclavas seen hitting police officers with large wooden bats and waves of protesters throwing themselves against the police ranks.
A substantial number of people have been spotted in the area, adding to the volatile situation. “There’s a full-on riot going on,” said one eyewitness. There’s a full-on riot at the other end of the street. All the roads over there are blocked. They’re throwing bricks.”
The tension in the area is palpable, with loud bangs and shouts being heard from the other side of the police barricade. “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” said one resident at the scene. More police reinforcements are arriving to control the situation.
Large numbers of police officers equipped with riot shields are present at the scene, and a metal beam has just been thrown amidst the unrest, heightening the danger for both Police and bystanders.
Jill Mortimer, former MP for Hartlepool, expressed her concern over the unfolding events. “I’m in town at the moment and I’m really concerned about reports of unrest on our streets. When community leaders fail to speak on behalf of the people, this is what happens. It’s a difficult situation to be in, but I would urge my successor, Jonathan Brash MP for Hartlepool, to speak up to de-escalate the situation.
As the situation develops, authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area for their safety. More updates will be provided as information becomes available.
