Barry Rossiter, 24, has been jailed for ten years after deliberately driving at a police officer in Ashford, seriously injuring him while attempting to evade arrest. Rossiter, formerly of Nickley Wood near Ashford, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, October 11. He will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole, with an additional two years on licence.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 26, 2024, when local officers were conducting speed checks on Coulter Road following concerns from residents. The officer, who was attempting to stop Rossiter’s speeding silver Vauxhall Vectra, stepped into the road with his hand raised. Instead of stopping, Rossiter accelerated, hitting the officer, who was thrown onto the bonnet and then onto the ground, sustaining serious injuries.
After the collision, Rossiter sped off, driving on the wrong side of the road and causing a crash that damaged another vehicle. Police later found the car, which had been set on fire, abandoned in Hornash Lane near Shadoxhurst.
A detailed investigation followed, with detectives speaking to witnesses and reviewing hours of CCTV footage from across Ashford. The investigation led to Rossiter being identified as the driver, though he evaded police for several days before being arrested in Hawkhurst on January 31. It was revealed that Rossiter only held a provisional driving licence.
While in custody, Rossiter attempted to bite a detective, resulting in an additional charge of assault on an emergency worker.
Chief Inspector Sarah Rivett, Ashford District Commander, praised the bravery of the injured officer and the investigative team. She said, “Police officers go out every day to protect the community, and I am always impressed by their bravery when faced with individuals like Rossiter. I am thankful the officer is recovering and working towards a full return when possible.”
Rossiter’s actions have left a lasting impact on the officer, who continues to recover from his injuries.
