In a groundbreaking achievement, the United Kingdom has successfully conducted commercial flight trials of advanced quantumg-based navigation systems that are impervious to jamming or spoofing by hostile actors. The Quantum Revolution in Navigation
While GPS jamming incidents remain relatively rare and do not directly impact an aircraft’s flight path, new quantum-based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems offer a promising solution. These systems could complement existing satellite-based navigation, enhancing the reliability of thousands of daily flights worldwide.
Infleqtion Leads the Way
Infleqtion, a quantum technology firm, collaborated with aerospace giants BAE Systems and QinetiQ to conduct these historic trials at MoD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire. The tests took place aboard QinetiQ’s RJ100 Airborne Technology Demonstrator, a modified aircraft.
Cutting-Edge Quantum Technologies
During the test flights, Infleqtion’s team showcased two groundbreaking quantum technologies:
- Tiqker Optical Atomic Clock: A compact, ultra-precise timekeeper crucial for accurate navigation.
- Ultra-Cold-Atom-Based Quantum System: These ultra-cold atoms, cooled to near absolute zero, serve as the building blocks for quantum accelerometers and gyroscopes.
Quantum Inertial Navigation System (Q-INS)
The technology tested forms part of the Quantum Inertial Navigation System (Q-INS). Unlike traditional GPS-dependent systems, Q-INS offers exceptional accuracy and resilience. It operates independently of satellite signals, making it resistant to disruptions.
Protecting Critical Infrastructure
